Five Leadership Trends to the Next Decade

The last decade is a strong contender for the title “the decade of dubious leadership.” From the handling of Katrina to the collapse of the banking system, it was a disastrous decade for leadership. Ironically, it was also a decade during which more was written on leadership than ever before. I’m hoping for a better decade of leadership, and here are my top five leadership trends I’d like to see take off in the coming years.

1. Good enough leadership. Enough with excellence. We may be better off with ‘good enough leadership.’ Our infatuation with leaders and celebrities smacks of feudalism, and might even be at the root of leadership failures. When we overly estimate high rank, we don’t see those above us as needing help, dependent, or fallible. So rather than feeling it’s our responsibility to help leaders, we hold them to an impossible standard of behavior, and when a lapse occurs, attribute the fault to an abuse of power, rather than to their human fallibility. This deification of leadership is bad for organizations and bad for democracy. It furthers the idea that change happens from above, and serves as a disincentive for others to step forward to lead and serve. And when leaders buy into their own deification they keep themselves isolated and out of touch with what’s happening. Good enough leadership recognizes leader’s limitations, fallibility, need for help and dependence on those below. Leaders can only be as good as the followers they develop.

2. Better followership. This is the flip side of #1 above. Subordinates are just as crucial to the success of an organization as the leader. The higher up you go in an organization the more dependent you are on those below for getting work done. Information is filtered to you through subordinates who are trying to curry your favor, compete for your job, and preserve their good name. Fostering better followership should be job #1 for any leader. The subordinate’s responsibility is to be honest and direct with the boss, to know and relate to the boss’s working style, expectations, and style of communication and above all, to let the boss know what’s happening, both problems and failures as well as successes.

3. Be a leader with limits. Sustainability is the buzzword of the decade. When we think about sustainability we tend to think about recycling and carbon emissions, but not about our bodies. Work-life balance is a sustainability issue; knowing our bodies’ limits, attending to fatigue, and factoring our energy into the bottom line should be the next big thing in the green revolution. If we closed a crucial deal but got sick in the process, what did we accomplish? Our bodies are like the canary in the coal mine: fatigue, fear, hesitation and uncertainty are important signals that can help us create more sustainable leadership practices for ourselves and for the people we lead.

4. Leading means Learning. Studies show that the most effective workplace learning doesn’t happen in a classroom, on a computer screen, or even at an expensive off-site, but through interaction, relationship and informal mentoring. In other words, learning happens all the time, day by day, minute by minute, through relationship and formal and informal mentoring. We know that the single biggest cost to an organization is finding and growing talent. Learning is a serious business and competitive advantage goes to the organization that recognizes and leverages implicit learning. What is the role of the leader in this? The role of the leader is to model that learning and to foster others’ desires to learn in the workplace.

5. Be nice. We’re inundated with research that shows the importance of positive emotions and a pleasant atmosphere on productivity and employee retention. A study in the Harvard Business Review (June 2005, Competent Jerks, Lovable Fools ) found that likeability is so key in the workplace that people are more likely to ask help from someone likeable than someone competent. The quality of interaction with our immediate boss and co-workers is cited as the single most important reason behind voluntary turnover, and is linked positively to employee engagement, morale, and performance. Finally, recent research that emotions are contagious, that people mimic facial expressions and synchronize their moods with others, makes the value of niceness even greater. And leaders are more emotionally “contagious” than others. It’s not rocket science, it’s something we all feel and know intuitively, but now research is validating our intuitions: the better the mood, the greater the level of collaboration, and the greater the results achieved. People who get on well get more done in less time and with less cost.

What would you like to see in the next decade?

‘Seeds’ is a new programme that comes out of CFOR’s belief in the capacity of individuals, organizations and whole communities to make a difference to Europe and this world. CFOR is supporting the goals of the European Union to strengthen intercultural dialogue, awareness of diversity and unity, as well the personal and collective creative processes needed to shape our multicultural societies. This workshop is funded by the EU/ Grundtvig. If you live in a European country, outside the UK, you can apply to CFOR for full support, including the seminar fee, transportation and accommodation.

The aim of the workshop, From Seed to Fulfillment: Creating our Future, is to enable you to catch the seeds of your wildest ideas and sense of what is possible, and to learn to discover how to support your deepest dreams to come to life, fulfillment and action in the world.

“Seeds” helps you to explore your personal pattern for finding your way from dream to fulfillment. People often long to find a way to both feel in touch with their deepest dreams and at the same time to be active and make a contribution. This congruence between being centered and in touch with one’s essence and creativity while being engaged with community and work is a great privilege if you can find it.

One of the toughest challenges we face in society is hopelessness, the belief that our problems are just so great, whether our personal problems or those of the society and the whole world, that we can never make a difference. The hopelessness gets compounded on one hand by pain and oppression, and on the other hand by thinking “its not my problem”. Many people feel that in order to take part in society they have to put aside their true dreams and deepest nature to ‘adapt’ or get by. This leads to a tragic loss of creativity and diversity, for individuals and for society.

We will actively seek a diverse group of participants on the course in respect to country where you are resident, your organization, profession or occupation, culture, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economics, age, health and more.

Perhaps what will most unite all the participants on the course will be a deep-seated interest in how one’s personal process of development leads to making a contribution to one’s community, Europe and the world.

We are ever inspired by the ideas and tools of Process Work – which allow you to link up to transformative processes driving you, shaping your personal life, your organisation, your community, and the collective movements of our times.

During the course:

  • Catch a seed or dream, and help it reach fulfillment, without losing the joy that was at the start
  • Discover the underlying orientation and direction of your learning from life experiences
  • Practice methods of working with internalised oppression, blocks and critics
  • Stay close to the essence of your project, while being open to feedback, surprise and change
  • Discover your personal patterns of creativity, whether expressive or internal using visual, auditory, proprioceptive and movement processes
  • Bridge your inner world and outer context, and the troubles Link your personal process with others in relationship, community and social movements
  • Appreciate endings and moments of completion, and the beginning of something new.

For more information, to recommend someone or apply, contact Eva as soon as possible. The application will be fairly short. Eva will gladly help you by telephone, if you have questions. We expect to make decisions before the end of March. You can reach Eva on Eva(at)cfor.info

CFOR has strong experience and rare expertise working in multicultural and transnational contexts, facilitating conflict and supporting individuals and communities to access the creativity within us as a society.

Ποιος είπε πως δε λογαριάζαμε το θάνατο;

Silvia.

Tracy.

Silvia.

Το άρθρο απ’το οποίο προέρχεται το βίντεο τελειώνει με μια εξαιρετική φράση που θα την καταλάβετε αν διαβάσετε προσεκτικά πώς περιγράφει την θεωρία εγκεφαλικής δραστηριότητας στα όρια του χάους: “They say it’s a fine line between genius and madness… maybe we’re finally beginning to understand the wisdom of this statement.” :)

The Relationship between the Helper and the Client and What is Healing?
Interview with Arny Mindell
interviewed by Tamara Scarlett-Lyon

How do you define “healing”?

I don’t use the word in therapy because I don’t consider people to be sick. But people say they are. In consensus reality when people have body symptoms they feel something is wrong. So if something hurts I will address the Consensus Reality symptoms or issues. In CR, healing is when the person can say, “I don’t like what is happening but am learning to get along with it”. Nobody was interested in my approach about this stuff at first! Almost everyone doesn’t like some of what is happening to them and wants to get rid of their pains and symptoms so I will try and do what I can- I’ll try anything at the CR level, but if that doesn’t work I help people go deeper.

Are you a healer?
Yes and no. Yes, if it means saying about a symptom, “this is me” along with all the other parts I like and the parts I don’t like in myself. I identify as being “someone who follows nature”.

What attitudes/qualities in a client or facilitator are conducive to healing?

Anybody’s attitude is conducive. Whatever a person says provides the right condition. For example, a woman I once worked with had a brain tumor but she was not interested in getting rid of it. She said, “I am sick, dying and hate my kids.” So I worked with her on her relationships with her kids. Afterward her head felt better and she needed less medication and was less groggy. She had a “bad” attitude yet her symptoms improved. As facilitator I feel it important to notice what you hate and like about yourself and make note of it. AWARENESS is key. With awareness you are a little bit better off.

How do we develop awareness?

By supporting yourself and others in doing it! Ask yourself and others, “what are you noticing right now?” We also seem made to program ourselves to do this thing or that (he giggles and chuckles as he says this)! (Tam’s note- in other words, yes, we can develop awareness, but there is also something in us that can easily follow habits which makes it difficult at times to be aware) “There is only 1 disease and it is ‘not noticing'”.

What do you see as your role when you work with others?

To notice what is happening with myself and the other person. Also, my role varies- sometimes I am a relationship counselor, sometimes I help people die. But “getting along with process” is what I tend to help people with.

How do you know when something you notice is “yours” rather than the client’s “stuff” or issues?

Awareness that nothing is just mine or just theirs (in the realm of non-locality) is important, but I rely on feedback- it is only just “me” or my stuff in the moment if I bring up something and get no reaction from the other person. But if I say something and the person’s face lights up, or they breathe deeply, or they say yes, then it is also theirs. At this point it really doesn’t matter if it is mine or who’s it is- as long as the person is feeling better!

Do you believe in miracles?

I don’t believe in them, I SEE them. A miracle is something helpful that happens beyond the every day mind’s understanding. The Process Mind allows stuff to happen. Some may call it, “divine intervention”. A day without at least 1 miracle is a bad day!

Do you believe in spirits or other non-consensus reality based entities?

Sometimes. When working with people who hold those types of belief systems I also often feel or see spirits or things like that in the atmosphere. Is it my fantasy? Yes, but I also sometimes bring in what I see and ask people if what I am noticing is significant for them. For example- I worked once with someone and became aware of “Uncle Fritz” so I asked the client if he knew an Uncle Fritz and the man said, yes, his Uncle fritz had died 4 months ago. Another example- I had a sort of fantasy where I saw a sort of fog going by that reminded me of my mother (who died some yrs ago), and so I talked to the fog as if it was her. I follow the moment.

How do you deal with ego or rank in relation to others?

If I go to a doctor and my doctor has too much rankfulness, I don’t feel well- like it’s not my own body any more. In my practice some people who don’t know me may come because of my reputation and say, “I have a problem, what should I do?” I don’t participate in this because I feel the person is in danger of giving his or her Self away. Instead I say we are going to follow what your body tells us to do. Their body is the director. If there is a relationship issue between me and the other person, I will address it, otherwise I just follow what is happening. This approach borders on political action and community consciousness. For me, political action requires rank consciousness and respect for the other and myself. Community consciousness occurs when all its parts and feelings are in our awareness. Thus, body problems and therapy in general are places to learn about politics and community.

Do you feel any edges around charging money for your services?

My feelings vary depending on the person. I used to think of it like I was similar to a carpenter- if a carpenter does something for you, you pay him. This is in the background. If someone does something for you, you pay them in some way. However, the 1st time I see people I can’t charge them due to an agreement I made with my 1st therapist. When I first went for therapy I had no money to pay. The therapist agreed to see me if I agreed to never charge others for the 1st session as a sort of repayment to my teacher. I see a lot of people only 1 time and so I do a lot of “free” sessions!

Can you mention any of your most wonderful healers?

The Kenyan shamans who worked with us were totally authentic. They gave us a big hug, and the community gave hugs, and the experience was integrated into their whole community. The shamans went into trance, came out and delivered helpful information to us. The only part I disagreed with was when they asked if Amy and I wanted protection. I said no. I don’t want to be protected. I don’t want protection from my enemy- I want relationship with everybody! I don’t want to hurt my enemies. I love people. To “heal me” you have to help me and others with our relationships.

The dream of a butterfly by Titia Vanbeugen

“The really exciting thing about being alive today is that we’re all here for a great transformation. It’s clear that we’re unsustainable. We have to change things and we’re figuring out how. And in a sense the old system is getting more entrenched, more violent, more powerful. It’s trying to keep itself alive while we know that we need a new system.

The best metaphor I’ve found about this situation comes from the biological world again. It’s the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. If you see the old system as a caterpillar crunching it’s way through the eco-system, eating up to three hundred times its weight in a single day, bloating itself until it just can’t function anymore, and then going to sleep with its skin hardening into a chrysalis. What happens in its body is that little imaginal disks (as they’re called by biologists) begin to appear in the body of the caterpillar and its immune system attacks them. But they keep coming up stronger and they start to link with each other. As they connect, as they link with each other, they mature into fully-fledged cells and more and more of them aggregate until the immune system of the caterpillar just can’t function any more. At that point the body of the caterpillar melts into a nutritive soup that can feed the butterfly.

I love this metaphor because it shows us why, first of all, we who want to change the world are co-existing with the old system for a while and why there’s no point in attacking the old system because you know the caterpillar is unsustainable so it’s going to die. What we have to focus on is “can we build a viable butterfly?” A butterfly that really can fly, because that’s not guaranteed. “

Πηγή: The New Economics Foundation (economics as if people and the planet mattered)

“Pay matters. How much you earn can determine your lifestyle, where you can afford to live, and your aspirations and status. But to what extent does what we get paid confer ‘worth’? Beyond a narrow notion of productivity, what impact does our work have on the rest of society, and do the financial rewards we receive correspond to this? Do those that get more contribute more to society?

Our report tells the story of six different jobs. We have chosen jobs from across the private and public sectors and deliberately chosen ones that illustrate the problem. Three are low paid – a hospital cleaner, a recycling plant worker and a childcare worker. The others are highly paid – a City banker, an advertising executive and a tax accountant. We examined the contributions they make to society, and found that, in this case, it was the lower paid jobs which involved more valuable work.

The report goes on to challenge ten of the most enduring myths surrounding pay and work. People who earn more don’t necessarily work harder than those who earn less. The private sector is not necessarily more efficient than the public sector. And high salaries don’t necessarily reflect talent.

The report offers a series of policy recommendations that would reduce the inequality between different incomes and reconnect salaries with the value of work.“

Dec 09 CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

Pollution and Opportunity: Copenhagen

U.S. President Obama will appear in Copenhagen in December to attend the climate change conference, in part because of pressures from Europe for him to do so.

Obama will take to the summit a US commitment to make substantial cuts in greenhouse gas pollution. But since he will attend only the first day of the summit, he may miss the key decision-making phase. Still, he is generally expected to offer to cut U.S. emissions by 17 percent by 2020, and 42 percent by 2030. We are happy he is going and wish him well on his way to collect the Nobel Peace prize in Sweden.

But for us, climate change is not only a real physical planetary problem. Climate change is also a very real psychological opportunity, pressing everyone to realize we live together in one (eco-) system. We can’t avoid one another any longer as each of us needs clean air, water, and less pollution.

Climate Change, an Opportunity? Yes, the opportunity is to learn how to work together and to model what we call, deep democracy. For example, the countries now rising on the economic scale will not want to cut back on their emissions unless it helps them financially. Should a poor country have to sacrifice its economic ambitions in the same manner as rich countries? Should the greatest world polluter, China, be the first to go green–after all, it only recently has become a rising economic star.

We expect U.S representatives to demonstrate a deeper democracy at this coming conference, and for that matter, everywhere on our little earth. We hope everyone sees the eco-problem as an opportunity to feel into, understand, and even speak for all the other diverse viewpoints at this conference. Feel the earth, and speak for her, as you speak for yourself and others.

Remember, the word “ecology” comes from “Ecos”, the Greek word for “home.” Creating more Eco awareness, means creating a more conscious home, a place where all have access to clean water and air etc, and also to deeper relationships. Deeper relationships? Yes, this means each of us needs to learn how to stand for ourselves, and in part, for everyone else on this planet, our home.

Deep democracy means that all levels of reality are important and contribute to the sense of a good “home.” Thus,

A. pollution needs to be reduced,

B. our projections need RECYCLING (remember the bad guy can be you) and

C. our sense of the earth as a unitary consciousness needs awakening.
