Pollution and Opportunity: Copenhagen
U.S. President Obama will appear in Copenhagen in December to attend the climate change conference, in part because of pressures from Europe for him to do so.
Obama will take to the summit a US commitment to make substantial cuts in greenhouse gas pollution. But since he will attend only the first day of the summit, he may miss the key decision-making phase. Still, he is generally expected to offer to cut U.S. emissions by 17 percent by 2020, and 42 percent by 2030. We are happy he is going and wish him well on his way to collect the Nobel Peace prize in Sweden.
But for us, climate change is not only a real physical planetary problem. Climate change is also a very real psychological opportunity, pressing everyone to realize we live together in one (eco-) system. We can’t avoid one another any longer as each of us needs clean air, water, and less pollution.
Climate Change, an Opportunity? Yes, the opportunity is to learn how to work together and to model what we call, deep democracy. For example, the countries now rising on the economic scale will not want to cut back on their emissions unless it helps them financially. Should a poor country have to sacrifice its economic ambitions in the same manner as rich countries? Should the greatest world polluter, China, be the first to go green–after all, it only recently has become a rising economic star.
We expect U.S representatives to demonstrate a deeper democracy at this coming conference, and for that matter, everywhere on our little earth. We hope everyone sees the eco-problem as an opportunity to feel into, understand, and even speak for all the other diverse viewpoints at this conference. Feel the earth, and speak for her, as you speak for yourself and others.
Remember, the word “ecology” comes from “Ecos”, the Greek word for “home.” Creating more Eco awareness, means creating a more conscious home, a place where all have access to clean water and air etc, and also to deeper relationships. Deeper relationships? Yes, this means each of us needs to learn how to stand for ourselves, and in part, for everyone else on this planet, our home.
Deep democracy means that all levels of reality are important and contribute to the sense of a good “home.” Thus,
A. pollution needs to be reduced,
B. our projections need RECYCLING (remember the bad guy can be you) and
C. our sense of the earth as a unitary consciousness needs awakening.
