Love makes a Family – addressing issues concerning lgbt families in therapy

Families with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) parents/children often struggle with the mainstream beliefs around what a family is and how people should be. This affects their lives in a way that can hinder their ability for fulfillment and personal growth. Homophobia and transphobia are present in the therapeutic community, affecting how therapists work with LGBT families. Heteronormativity is the norm and LGBT families are often in the position of having to educate the therapist on the issues that affect their lives. This workshop explores homophobia and heternormativity and how this affects their work with LGBT families. Using experiential exercises and discussion we will explore the therapist’s beliefs and attitudes. We will co-create space for reflection and a deeper understanding of our beliefs and attitudes and how these can support personal and social change, appreciation of diversity, less marginalization and more resilient communities.
