Love makes a Family \u2013 addressing issues concerning lgbt families in therapy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Alexandra-Ariadni Vassiliou, Ph.D.<\/p>\n Families with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) parents\/children often struggle with the mainstream beliefs around what a family is and how people should be. This affects their lives in a way that can hinder their ability for fulfillment and personal growth. Homophobia and transphobia are present in the therapeutic community, affecting how therapists work with LGBT families. Heteronormativity is the norm and LGBT families are often in the position of having to educate the therapist on the issues that affect their lives. This workshop explores homophobia and heternormativity and how this affects their work with LGBT families. Using experiential exercises and discussion we will explore the therapist\u2019s beliefs and attitudes.
