karate chops<br \/>\nwere the same thing<br \/>\nI thought they were both pork chops<br \/>\nand because my grandmother thought it was cute<br \/>\nand because they were my favourite<br \/>\nshe let me keep doing it<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">not really a big deal<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">one day<br \/>\nbefore I realized fat kids are not designed to climb trees<br \/>\nI fell out of a tree<br \/>\nand bruised the right side of my body<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I didn\u2019t want to tell my grandmother about it<br \/>\nbecause I was afraid I\u2019d get in trouble<br \/>\nfor playing somewhere that I shouldn\u2019t have been<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">a few days later the gym teacher noticed the bruise<br \/>\nand I got sent to the principal\u2019s office<br \/>\nfrom there I was sent to another small room<br \/>\nwith a really nice lady<br \/>\nwho asked me all kinds of questions<br \/>\nabout my life at home<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I saw no reason to lie<br \/>\nas far as I was concerned<br \/>\nlife was pretty good<br \/>\nI told her \u201cwhenever I\u2019m sad<br \/>\nmy grandmother gives me karate chops\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">this led to a full scale investigation<br \/>\nand I was removed from the house for three days<br \/>\nuntil they finally decided to ask how I got the bruises<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">news of this silly little story quickly spread through the school<br \/>\nand I earned my first nickname<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">pork chop<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to this day<br \/>\nI hate pork chops<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I\u2019m not the only kid<br \/>\nwho grew up this way<br \/>\nsurrounded by people who used to say<br \/>\nthat rhyme about sticks and stones<br \/>\nas if broken bones<br \/>\nhurt more than the names we got called<br \/>\nand we got called them all<br \/>\nso we grew up believing no one<br \/>\nwould ever fall in love with us<br \/>\nthat we\u2019d be lonely forever<br \/>\nthat we\u2019d never meet someone<br \/>\nto make us feel like the sun<br \/>\nwas something they built for us<br \/>\nin their tool shed<br \/>\nso broken heart strings bled the blues<br \/>\nas we tried to empty ourselves<br \/>\nso we would feel nothing<br \/>\ndon\u2019t tell me that hurts less than a broken bone<br \/>\nthat an ingrown life<br \/>\nis something surgeons can cut away<br \/>\nthat there\u2019s no way for it to metastasize<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">it does<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">she was eight years old<br \/>\nour first day of grade three<br \/>\nwhen she got called ugly<br \/>\nwe both got moved to the back of the class<br \/>\nso we would stop get bombarded by spit balls<br \/>\nbut the school halls were a battleground<br \/>\nwhere we found ourselves outnumbered day after wretched day<br \/>\nwe used to stay inside for recess<br \/>\nbecause outside was worse<br \/>\noutside we\u2019d have to rehearse running away<br \/>\nor learn to stay still like statues giving no clues that we were there<br \/>\nin grade five they taped a sign to her desk<br \/>\nthat read beware of dog<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to this day<br \/>\ndespite a loving husband<br \/>\nshe doesn\u2019t think she\u2019s beautiful<br \/>\nbecause of a birthmark<br \/>\nthat takes up a little less than half of her face<br \/>\nkids used to say she looks like a wrong answer<br \/>\nthat someone tried to erase<br \/>\nbut couldn\u2019t quite get the job done<br \/>\nand they\u2019ll never understand<br \/>\nthat she\u2019s raising two kids<br \/>\nwhose definition of beauty<br \/>\nbegins with the word mom<br \/>\nbecause they see her heart<br \/>\nbefore they see her skin<br \/>\nthat she\u2019s only ever always been amazing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">he<br \/>\nwas a broken branch<br \/>\ngrafted onto a different family tree<br \/>\nadopted<br \/>\nbut not because his parents opted for a different destiny<br \/>\nhe was three when he became a mixed drink<br \/>\nof one part left alone<br \/>\nand two parts tragedy<br \/>\nstarted therapy in 8th grade<br \/>\nhad a personality made up of tests and pills<br \/>\nlived like the uphills were mountains<br \/>\nand the downhills were cliffs<br \/>\nfour fifths suicidal<br \/>\na tidal wave of anti depressants<br \/>\nand an adolescence of being called popper<br \/>\none part because of the pills<br \/>\nand ninety nine parts because of the cruelty<br \/>\nhe tried to kill himself in grade ten<br \/>\nwhen a kid who still had his mom and dad<br \/>\nhad the audacity to tell him \u201cget over it\u201d as if depression<br \/>\nis something that can be remedied<br \/>\nby any of the contents found in a first aid kit<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">to this day<br \/>\nhe is a stick on TNT lit from both ends<br \/>\ncould describe to you in detail the way the sky bends<br \/>\nin the moments before it\u2019s about to fall<br \/>\nand despite an army of friends<br \/>\nwho all call him an inspiration<br \/>\nhe remains a conversation piece between people<br \/>\nwho can\u2019t understand<br \/>\nsometimes becoming drug free<br \/>\nhas less to do with addiction<br \/>\nand more to do with sanity<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">we weren\u2019t the only kids who grew up this way<br \/>\nto this day<br \/>\nkids are still being called names<br \/>\nthe classics were<br \/>\nhey stupid<br \/>\nhey spaz<br \/>\nseems like each school has an arsenal of names<br \/>\ngetting updated every year<br \/>\nand if a kid breaks in a school<br \/>\nand no one around chooses to hear<br \/>\ndo they make a sound?<br \/>\nare they just the background noise<br \/>\nof a soundtrack stuck on repeat<br \/>\nwhen people say things like<br \/>\nkids can be cruel?<br \/>\nevery school was a big top circus tent<br \/>\nand the pecking order went<br \/>\nfrom acrobats to lion tamers<br \/>\nfrom clowns to carnies<br \/>\nall of these were miles ahead of who we were<br \/>\nwe were freaks<br \/>\nlobster claw boys and bearded ladies<br \/>\noddities<br \/>\njuggling depression and loneliness playing solitaire spin the bottle<br \/>\ntrying to kiss the wounded parts of ourselves and heal<br \/>\nbut at night<br \/>\nwhile the others slept<br \/>\nwe kept walking the tightrope<br \/>\nit was practice<br \/>\nand yeah<br \/>\nsome of us fell<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but I want to tell them<br \/>\nthat all of this shit<br \/>\nis just debris<br \/>\nleftover when we finally decide to smash all the things we thought<br \/>\nwe used to be<br \/>\nand if you can\u2019t see anything beautiful about yourself<br \/>\nget a better mirror<br \/>\nlook a little closer<br \/>\nstare a little longer<br \/>\nbecause there\u2019s something inside you<br \/>\nthat made you keep trying<br \/>\ndespite everyone who told you to quit<br \/>\nyou built a cast around your broken heart<br \/>\nand signed it yourself<br \/>\nyou signed it<br \/>\n\u201cthey were wrong\u201d<br \/>\nbecause maybe you didn\u2019t belong to a group or a click<br \/>\nmaybe they decided to pick you last for basketball or everything<br \/>\nmaybe you used to bring bruises and broken teeth<br \/>\nto show and tell but never told<br \/>\nbecause how can you hold your ground<br \/>\nif everyone around you wants to bury you beneath it<br \/>\nyou have to believe that they were wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">they have to be wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">why else would we still be here?<br \/>\nwe grew up learning to cheer on the underdog<br \/>\nbecause we see ourselves in them<br \/>\nwe stem from a root planted in the belief<br \/>\nthat we are not what we were called we are not abandoned cars stalled out and sitting empty on a highway<br \/>\nand if in some way we are<br \/>\ndon\u2019t worry<br \/>\nwe only got out to walk and get gas<br \/>\nwe are graduating members from the class of<br \/>\nfuck off we made it<br \/>\nnot the faded echoes of voices crying out<br \/>\nnames will never hurt me<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">of course<br \/>\nthey did<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">but our lives will only ever always<br \/>\ncontinue to be<br \/>\na balancing act<br \/>\nthat has less to do with pain<br \/>\nand more to do with
